Visions and Values Committee Summary of Meeting #5

The Visions and Values Committee met on September 23, 2019, facilitated by Kristen Miles from OSBA.  Fourteen of the twenty members were present. The group reviewed revised draft Values Statements presented in two format options.  A preferred format was selected and several edits were made. The group then reviewed several draft Vision Statement phrases, voted on favorite phrases, then discussed key meanings and preferred language in the top three phrases.  Next, the group determined a plan for getting community feedback. The first action within the plan is to poll attendees of the upcoming Community Engagement Night happening on Tuesday, October 8th from 5:30-7:00pm at all Corbett Campuses.  Further community feedback is planned for later in the process.  The group expects the process will be completed in one or two more meetings.

Visions and Values Committee Summary of Meeting #4

The Visions and Values Committee met on August 7, 2019, facilitated by Kristen Miles from OSBA.  Thirteen of the twenty members were present. The group reviewed draft values statements which were prepared at the previous meeting, and discussed ways to make the statements more concise.  The primary task of the evening was to develop initial thoughts to inform a Vision Statement.  After an initial discussion of the purpose of Vision Statements, the group wrote twelve draft statements imagining what the district would be like in the future if the draft Value Statements were successful.  After discussion of the draft statements, the group discussed the potential to share statements with the community once they are developed.

Visions and Values Committee Summary of Meeting #3

The Visions and Values Committee met on June 5, 2019, facilitated by Kristen Miles from OSBA.  Thirteen of the twenty members were present. The group reviewed the written Purpose Statement of the committee, and clarified that we are recommending Visions and Values to be adopted by the district.  The primary task of the evening was to develop a first pass at values.  Starting off, the group reviewed example Values Statements from other Oregon districts.  Through a process of engaging all present committee members in generating a wide range of words representing values, grouping them and narrowing them down, a list of five rough draft Value Statement sentences was developed. The group planned that at the next meeting, the draft Values Statements will be refined, and thoughts about seeking community feedback will be discussed.

Vision and Values Committee Summary of Meeting #2

The second meeting of the Corbett Schools Visions and Values Committee convened on May 20, 2019, with all twenty members present, facilitated by Kristin Miles of the Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA).  Much of the meeting centered around clarifying the purpose and deliverable of the group.  While the Saxton Report was fairly clear in recommendations for composition, consensus and timeline, it was fairly vague about scope.  The committee determined that the outcome of their work would be a Vision Statement and list of Values to help guide strategic planning and future decision making of the District. The committee expressed a desire for civility and grace from the community as they embark on the Vision and Values process.  The composition of the committee was discussed as being 1/3 “supporters”, 1/3 “detractors” and 1/3 “balanced” members.  It was requested that the selection process be described in further detail.  The group discussed the importance of focusing on students as the Vision and Values are composed.  As the group determines a need for information in the future, the possibility of bringing other sources such as community members to present to the group was discussed.  A charter district application has been received by the District, and a separate committee composed of volunteer members from this committee (but not including board members) will be formed to review the application for completeness.  The committee expects to begin discussing values at the next meeting and requested to review example values of other education institutions.

Visions and Values Committee Meeting Summary –

The first meeting of the twenty members of the Corbett Schools Visions and Values Committee convened on May 6, 2019, facilitated by Kristin Miles of the Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA).  The group established a list of common norms and expectations to use as a framework for working together, such as treating each other with respect, finishing meetings on time, and having inclusive participation.  A rough plan for communicating the group’s progress was established, and will use the District’s website as a primary location for information, supplemented by hard copies posted around the community. Superintendent Trani gave a comparative analysis of the District’s financial outlook if the enrollment were to be reduced.  The group discussed what they would like to hear about at the next meeting, including more financial information, comparisons to other smaller districts, online charter schools, and examples of vision and value statements. The group expects to meet about four times before pausing for a short summer break, and reconvening late summer.
