C.M.S. Memoir Cafe Night – Nov. 15

On Thursday, November 15th we will be hosting our Memoir Café in the middle school. It will take place from 4:00 – 6:30.

Our students have been working on their memoir books for over two months. They’ve all written two poems and four distinct chapters, and have edited and polished them to perfection. They’ve completed a handful of art pieces to accompany their writing, and are currently working on compiling the entire project into book form, to be displayed during the Memoir Café. In addition, they’ve each chosen one specific chapter from their memoirs to workshop in-depth with their teacher, and to present in a reading to the community.

We’ve divided the students up into five groups, so they can listen to some stories they haven’t already heard in class. The attached PDF will show you which room your student will be reading in, and whether they are scheduled for the first block (4:00 – 5:00) or the second block (5:15 – 6:30). The intermission is a great time for families to leave or arrive; you don’t have to be there for both blocks, unless you want to! We just ask that anyone arriving for the second block be mindful of the fact that students are reading behind closed doors – please be quiet in the halls until the intermission.

Also, during the event, members of school Sparrow Club will be selling baked goods in the commons. This will be a good place to mingle, eat some treats, and meet some other families. All proceeds from the bake sale will be donated to help our Sparrow, Nova.

If your family will be out of town on the 15th, or if you have a prior commitment, please let us know, so we can adjust our schedules. Otherwise, we’ll see you at the Memoir Café!

Hi Everyone-

We just finished the Chapter 4 memoir today.  This (and chapters 2 & 3) should be uploaded to google classroom.  In the next couple of weeks, students will take a final revision on all of these chapters.  They will select their favorite to really focus on bringing to the next level and sharing with a larger group.

A big thank you to those parents that attended last week’s field trip.  I love having those opportunities for the class!  We’ve been learning more about the creation of the Constitution and will continue with our civics studies.

Hopefully, this rain helps students find even more time to read.  This month our goal was to read two heftier novels.  Most students are reading the same book with a reading partner as well.  It was great to see how excited students were to visit Powell’s last week on our field trip.

Also, I’ve noticed that some students in my math class are falling behind with lessons.  If students are caught up in core, this would be a great weekend to catch up on math.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Thank you to everyone who came in for conferences this week.  I really appreciate that time!  If you would still like to conference with me, please send an email and we can set up a time.

Jog-A-Thon:  First off a big thank you to Joel and Karen for coming in at the last minute to help with the Jog-A-Thon.  If you have pledges, you can still turn those in either at  or they can be brought in to school.

Next week we will be heading to the courthouses downtown and then to Powell’s in the afternoon.  There is no cost for this field trip, but it would be great if kids could bring a few $$ to buy a book at Powell’s.  Permission slips were sent home and they are required to attend this field trip.

Also, a few of you have had some questions about Google Classroom.  I’ve been using this for a couple of years, but I’m still new to the guardian view/emails.  Hopefully, you can see if your student turned in their memoir today on time and also what their score was for their super quiz this week.  I’ll try to send out more information about how to get information via your guardian summaries in the next couple of weeks.

Enjoy this beautiful weekend!

We had a blast at Mt. St. Helens.  The weather was perfect.  We were able to see a ton of cool geology and the kids had great behavior overall.  Thank you to Alisa, Amy, Kara, Katey, Dorthy, Natalie and Kim for coming on the trip!  I appreciate your support and flexibility.

Next week we have conferences.  I have only 17 families signed up for a conference.  There are still plenty of available times.  Please go  to sign up. If you can’t make any of these times, please let me know.  Students will be setting goals for this conference and we will review progress for this year so far.

See you next week!

Hello Everyone-

I sent home a to sign up for conferences this week.  Thank you to everyone who has already signed up.  You should have received a confirmation email of your date and time.  Please sign up for a conference if you haven’t already done so.

Also, permission slips for our overnight went home this week.  If you would like to chaperone you need to fill out and turn in a background check and confidentiality form into the HS/MS office by Monday, 9/24.  These need to be done every year.    Volunteer background check application (1) Confidentiality Statement    Also, medications and authorization forms need to be turned in to our nurses assistant ASAP, Debbie Baker, for this trip.  Please talk or email her (dbaker@corbett.k12.or.us) if you have any questions.   If you have any questions other about this trip, please feel free to email me.

I was able to invite a lot of you this week to our google classroom.  We’ve been using google classroom for a couple of years for some of our assignments and super quizzes.  I’m excited to see how this will help you get a snapshot of what is happening in class.  Again google classroom, my emails, and handouts are just a starting point to the conversation about what is happening during the school.  The bulk of the conversation is hopefully still primarily with your student.  😉

Best,

Rhiannon Young
