Hello, families and friends of Corbett Middle School students!

On Thursday, November 15th we will be hosting our Memoir Caf辿 in the middle school. It will take place from 4:00 6:30.

Our students have been working on their memoir books for over two months. Theyve all written two poems and four distinct chapters, and have edited and polished them to perfection. Theyve completed a handful of art pieces to accompany their writing, and are currently working on compiling the entire project into book form, to be displayed during the Memoir Caf辿. In addition, theyve each chosen one specific chapter from their memoirs to workshop in-depth with their teacher, and to present in a reading to the community.

Weve divided the students up into five groups, so they can listen to some stories they havent already heard in class. The attached PDF will show you which room your student will be reading in, and whether they are scheduled for the first block (4:00 5:00) or the second block (5:15 6:30). The intermission is a great time for families to leave or arrive; you dont have to be there for both blocks, unless you want to! We just ask that anyone arriving for the second block be mindful of the fact that students are reading behind closed doors please be quiet in the halls until the intermission.

Also, during the event, members of school Sparrow Club will be selling baked goods in the commons. This will be a good place to mingle, eat some treats, and meet some other families. All proceeds from the bake sale will be donated to help our Sparrow, Nova.

If your family will be out of town on the 15th, or if you have a prior commitment, please let us know, so we can adjust our schedules. Otherwise, well see you at the Memoir Caf辿!

Every week one of the students in our class gets to sit out the super quiz and write about what weve been doing. This weeks writer was 8th grader Austin Santosa. Thanks, Austin!

This week at Corbett Middle School we learned and studied a bunch of things and Im going to tell you all about it. Starting off on Monday, of course everyone hates it because its the beginning of the week and the end to our fun weekend. By fun I mean staying home all day and doing nothing. Anyways we started our morning with a freewrite. The freewrite was trying to name all the 50 states of America on a sheet of paper. The highest score someone got was around 40. After the freewrite we did vocab. Vocab is when we learn in depth about 10 words. Some are common but most of them are words that we have never heard of before.

After vocab we learned about all of the different types of government and how they work. We learned about the government all throughout the week. Shortly after we learned about the government we watched a little video on Stranger Things. We talked about how a setting can change mentally. After this we had math, read aloud, lunch, break and reading. We always have those 5 topics everyday so I dont really need to go in depth about it.

After reading we read this packet all about the government and after that we had to fill out a paper about what we learned. Afterwards we got assigned our Raised By poem. Its a poem about our lives and all of the stuff we had when we were growing up. So it can be about anything you grew up with. Like shows, sports, food, the important people in your life, and so much more.

On Tuesday we did the same thing. Read more about Americas government, work more on our Raised By poems and basically did the same thing on Monday. We just worked on our projects more and more. The only thing that we didnt do on Monday that we did on Tuesday was vocab and watch another part of Stranger Things.

On Wednesday we had an important test. The fake bar exam. The bar exam is a test that you have to take if you want to be a lawyer. The test is a very hard test that you have to study for years. Mr. Houck said his sister had to study for the test for 2 years and even then she didnt pass it, so she had to take it again another time. We did the bar exam but a worse version of it. It wasnt the actual thing, it was a knockoff bar exam which was still pretty hard for some people. We also didnt study the test for 2 years, weve only been studying for a couple days. If we passed the bar exam with a 80% or higher we could participate in a game we did in the afternoon.

The game was answering Constitutional law questions on the T.V., Jeopardy style. Of course the winners had a prize. The prize was a Reeses cup. Of course Mias group won again, but thats okay, we are used to it by now.

On Thursday we just did the same thing again. Worked on our memoirs and poems and reviewed what we learned over the past week. We also watched a video of the Cookie Monster which was pretty funny. It was about how important a cookie is to him. In the afternoon we did the super quiz and reading letter #4. A reading letter is where you answer the questions Mr. Houck asks you about your book.

We went over only a week in Mr. Houcks class. Imagine what it will be like for another 7 months until summer break!

Every week one of the students in our class gets to sit out the super quiz and write about what we’ve been doing. This week’s writer was 8th grader Hailey Pinjagic. Thanks, Hailey!

Over the last three weeks in Mr. Houcks class, we studied and learned about different groups of Native Americans. We got split up into groups of four, with eight groups, and we read a page of an article about Native Americans, then had to present what we learned in our reading. Some kids did skits while others just wrote some cool facts down and read them to the class.

One of the first writing assignments we did was called the Where I’m From poems. We had to write a poem that told people how we are the way we are, like what made us the person we are today. I did really enjoy this assignment because it got to let some people know how I grew up and why I am the person I am today.

We also started to learn about the different layers in the earth. Honestly that is not one of my favorite things to do, but I toughed it out and it feels good that I now know that. Also we had to learn 25 different vocab words for the volcano study, and we are going to take a test on it.

Now one of my favorite things to do is write reading letters. I don’t know why, but I have always loved writing freely and I know it’s not all free writing but it’s definitely fun. Houck gives us three prompts about our book and we have to write them, but our first thing we have to do is write a paragraph about our book and say hello and then our last paragraph has to be goodbye.

Also this year we have reading partners. We tell them what is going on in our book, and we also have to write it down in our reading journals.

And that is some of what happened in the last three weeks in Houcks class.

Every few weeks, one student in our class gets to sit out the super quiz and write the weekly update. This weeks update was done by 7th grader Jackson Minsker. Thanks, Jackson!

This week the sixth graders were at outdoor school, so we got to have field trips every day, except for Thursday, because there were some kids who still needed to finish up state testing. But we still got to have some fun after they had finished up.

On Monday we took the bus to the Oregon clinic in portland and got on the Max there. We rode the Max all the way to the zoo, which took about 30 minutes. We got off at the underground tunnel where the Max runs under the zoo. When we had gotten on the elevator to go up to ground level, when the door was about to shut, Houck stuck his hand out the doors and yelled, No, I cant go! They laughed. He did this four or five times. So once we got up to ground level we all walked right past the zoo and towards the freeway. Everyone was so confused but after walking for a few minutes alongside the freeway we came to a path which lead up the small mountain that was by the freeway. That trail was the 4T trail. After reaching the top of the 4T trail we stopped and ate lunch. Then we went back down the other side of the small mountain and ended up a few blocks from the tram, which was our next stop. When we got to the tram we had to wait for a few minutes for one of the trams to come back up. After getting off the tram at the bottom we got to go look at the engine room which was pretty cool. So when we were done with that we had to wait for a half an hour or so for the trolley to arrive. The trolley was super crowded. I barely had enough room to grab my water bottle from my backpack. The trolley just ended up dropping us off at another Max station. We had to get on another Max to get back to the bus. So all in all Monday was a really fun day, but now onto Tuesday.

On Tuesday we got a tour of P.S.U. When we got to P.S.U. we were early so we walked around for a little bit. Then we came across a soccer field. We went onto the soccer field and I expected to get kicked off almost instantly, but we actually didn’t get kicked off. After the tour of P.S.U. we walked to the Portland Art Museum to look at their Ancient China exhibit. But we also got to look at the Laika exhibit. If you don’t know what Laika is, its a stop motion animation movie company. Laika created the movies The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, Coraline, Paranorman and the Corpse Bride. Tuesday was an okay field trip but definitely not as good as Monday.

Wednesday we went to the PGE power plant and got a tour of the facility. Our guides names were Terry and Michael. We learned how the dam works and also how they get baby salmon down the river safely. When we went to lunch someone asked our guide if he had Snapchat. Terry was maybe 75, so he had no idea what Snapchat, was so some people tried to explain it to him. He didn’t understand anything they were saying, so they decided to create him a Snapchat called PGE_Terry, which was the best thing that had happened all week, until we were on our way back to the school and Houck said Anybody want ice cream? All the kids on the bus said yes to getting ice cream but we had just crossed the Stark Street bridge. We had already passed Dairy Queen, so everybody was upset for a few seconds until someone said Turn around! Everybody started yelling that, so the bus driver turned around and went back to Dairy Queen for us. We also learned that our bus driver was a Twitch streamer, so he gained about 30 followers on Twitch. Wednesday overall was the best field trip of the week, because we got Dairy Queen, we set up a Snapchat for Terry, and our bus driver was a Twitch streamer.
