Hello Families! Here is a quick run-down of what we did this week:
Age of Exploration
We mapped the routes and learned about Amerigo Vespucci this week.
Writing
Drafting our Feature Article supporting paragraphs and developing scenic leads to draw in our audience
Reading
Non-Fiction book studies. We worked on strategies to figure out complex vocabulary.
Buddy Class
On Wednesday, December 19 at 3 pm we will decorate gingerbread people with Mrs. Mack (our buddy class).  Thanks to the Hergerts/Haydens and Cranes for purchasing candy and frosting. We would use a couple of more cans of white frosting and small candies to decorate. We also need about 60 large white Chinet plates and plastic wrap (to hopefully get them home).
Activities Before Winter Break:
Thursday, December 20 will be our last day before our Winter Break. School resumes on Monday, January 7, 2019!

Ugly Holiday sweater contest will be this Wednesday.

Canned Food Drive~ Our class is participating in our annual Canned Food Drive. Please send any extra food that you can donate. We are also needing other supplies such as: toothpaste, toilet paper, shampoo, etc. December 19 will be the final day before items are boxed up.  We are hoping that we can line the hall on both sides from the west commons to the east commons. All food and supplies collected will be donated to Corbett families.

This week were in charge of the 4/5 Morning Meeting. We will be responsible for next week, as well. The kids did a fantastic job recreating a newsroom. Special shout-out to Nicholas and Peyton. They were our “news anchors” and dressed the part. They both even had their own “coffee cups” just like they see our own news anchors have on their desks!

First Trimester Perfect Attendance: Aaliyah, Avalea, CJ, Laiken, Payton, Olive, and River

Nonfiction Reading: We worked on strategies to figure our difficult words in complex nonfiction text. Sometimes the author just tells you the meaning and sometimes you have to look around for clues.

Monthly reading logs: We completed the first week of December school logs and subtotaled the minutes we had read. Readers will need to add Friday and Saturday and then add their minutes together.

°Â°ù¾±³Ù¾±²Ô²µ:ÌýWe are continuing to work on our Feature Articles. This week we worked on developing a survey, having our classmates take it, and then looking over the results. We then worked on phrases that we could use in our write up. Here are some examples:

Examples are:
From the survey data…
Based on the survey data…
           Use percents, not plain numbers
When asked ___________  students responded _________
According to a recent study ___% of students said ________
High Frequency Words: We had quite a few writers correctly spell 5 out of 5 of their words this week. Lists went home on Thursday and we will have one more test next week before taking a break until after our winter break.
Age of Exploration: This week we learned about Vasco Da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan. We are also reading Karen Hesse’s book, Stowaway, to help us have a better understanding of just all that these explorers endured to sail off to unknown places.
´¡°ù³Ù:ÌýWe read, Snowmen at Night on Thursday afternoon and then tried our hand at using chalk pastels to recreate a few of the illustrations from the book. We will continue with more snowman art next week.
Buddy Class Project: We will be decorating gingerbread cookies (thanks to Chris Shaw) on Wednesday, December 19 at 3 pm with our Mrs. Mack’s Class. We would love some donations of white canned frosting, large Chinet plates (the white, sturdy ones), green or red plastic wrap, and small candies to help decorate our gingerbread people.  Some extra volunteers that day would also be appreciated.
Canned Food Drive: Our class is participating in our annual Canned Food Drive. Please send any extra food that you can donate. We are also needing other supplies such as: toothpaste, toilet paper, shampoo, etc. December 19 will be the final day before items are boxed up and donated to a local family.  If you or someone you know could use some extra help this year, please feel free to email me.
Winter Break: Thursday, December 20 will be our last day before our Winter Break. School resumes on Monday, January 7, 2019!
Enjoy your weekend and stay warm!
Michelle

Mrs. Dawkins’ Class Report

Thursday, November 8, 2018

Written by the reporters of Mrs. Dawkins’ Class

Writing     By Andrew &  Ethan

This week our class looked at how news reports and feature articles are the same and how they are different. We used copies of the Gresham Outlook and our Scholastic News to compare and contrast each type of reporting. Each differs in timing, style and how they begin and end. Next week, we will be writing our own feature article.

High Frequency Words

By Mrs. Dawkins

Lists for next week’s test went home today! Kids should be studying these at home. Our test will be next Thursday!

Reading      By Dario and Evan

Two weeks ago, Mrs. Dawkins class started reading non-fiction. This week we looked at how complex nonfiction books might have more than one main idea in a chapter or paragraph.

We also began a new read aloud a new book called The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. So far it is a  book with that seems to have multiple themes as in: Sadness, anger, panic and relief.

Ms.Peterson        By Payton, Lily, and Rhyder

Ms. Peterson has been substituting for Mr. Wallace for the past 10 weeks.  We are sad to see her go, but happy that Mr. Wallace is coming back! Mr. Wallace has been home taking care of his new baby, Elliot, while Ms. Peterson has been in charge of his class. She worked very hard with not only Mr. Wallace’s class, but also with 4th  graders doing math. Some of our classmates have her as a math teacher. She lets many kids go at their own pace and she is much loved by all her students, including her math students. We wish her the best and hope she comes back to visit us soon!

Cartography         By Gena and Avalea

In Corbett Grade School In ms.Dawkins room the class has been learning ow to make and draw maps and plot points on the maps. When we are all done, we are going to use the maps to see the routes of the explorers. We are also drawing the ocean lines and the continents. It was really difficult and challenging to learn to draw the maps and plot points but sometimes it was fun. Next week in cartography we are moving on from cartography map making, to learning how the explores used their maps and followed their routes.

Band     By River, Nicholas and Job

At Corbett Grade School in the band room, Mr. Kilgore had the band student take a test on playin, Cardiff by the Sea. Everyone is expected to bring their instrument home every night so they can practice the song the band classroom is currently working on or go ahead. Mr. Killgore said anyone can go head on any songs, just make sure you are doing it correctly.

Art      By Isaiah and Jaden

Wednesday, Nov. 7,2018 in Mrs. Dawkins’ class all the students participated in an art project. The young artists learned how to mix the primary colors turquoise, yellow, and magenta, but there was a twist, The kids could not make animals or other things, but to only make things you can not name or shapes. This is always good because it helps calm the mind, release stress, and calm tense muscles. Mrs. Dawkins had an idea though, it was to make us move to different tables and of course we all knew that there would be a challenge. This was of course was one of the best art classes all year, And they all had fun.

Music and Movement –

Ms.Oakley`s Community Sing-along/Dance

By Delaney and Laiken

On Thursday, November 15, Ms.Oakley’s music class at Corbett Grade School will be hosting a community dance and sing-a-long. The times to view are 4:00 pm – -5:00 pm or 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Your family can choose one time to come and sing along with your kids and enjoy the music and dancing, The class will be playing ukuleles and be singing songs that they have been learning through the past months of school.

Families are getting these invitations because Ms.Oakley is inspiring kids to show their parents what moves and songs they can sing when their with a group of other great kids, she also wants kids to face their fear of doing things that are in front of crowds and let their voices be heard. Ms.Oakley has done a great job teaching the students how to play and sing songs that she made and ones on the radio.

Please come check out the community sing-along and dance and see what these students can do.

Veteran’s Day           By Olivia Young and Aaliyah Eastman

Veteran’s Day is Sunday, November 11, 2018, but we will be observing the holiday on Monday, November 12. That means no school on Monday. We will make up missing this day on Friday November, 16. Veterans day is when we celebrate the people that served to protect the USA from dangerous wars and deaths. Veterans risked their lives to keep us safe that is why we give one whole day to celebrate the men and women that served for our country and to also celebrate the bravery of those we have lost.

At Corbett District School in the MPB all the families of students will be able to attend to the Veterans day breakfast. At the breakfast you will get to have breakfast with the amazing people who served for our country. The breakfast will take place at 8:00am on Sunday November 11 2018. Even though Veteran’s Day is on Sunday we will be observing the holiday on Monday and will not have school.

Strings   By Greyson, Jonas, Reagan

When you walk in to strings class you will hear 36 violins, 14 cellos, 9 violas and 1 base. Some of the songs that the string class plays are Jingle Bells, Twinkle Twinkle, Dreidel and French Folk Song. Mr. Bloyer is guiding them in there musical path. Mr. Bloyer teaches the class all these great songs so that the class can perform in front of an audience. He has been teaching the class since the beginning of the school year. If you get a chance to meet him, take the opportunity because he is a really nice guy. Strings class is going really well this year because of all of the students and Mr. Bloyer working together.

Acts of Wonder

Kaylssa and CJ

Today we were playing the name game during acts of wonder. The name game is when you have a ball and you toss it around the circle and whoever has the ball says a name and then tosses it to the person that they said the name of. Mrs. Flinn kept adding balls to the game and sometimes we got silly and the balls would collide and other times we very focused and we did really well. Then we practiced what it would be like to be on heavy earth and light earth, what it would be like to be in heavy water and in light water, and what it would be like to be in heavy fire and then light fire. This prepared us for our skits. Then we practiced our skits about everyday obstacles that people face in life. We will have one more session with Mrs. Flinn before we meet with our buddy class to share our skits on Friday, November 16.

Our news this week was written by our young writers!

Writing: Journalism

By Delaney Crane and Mrs. Dawkins

The 4/5 classrooms at Corbett Grade School have a new writing unit on journalism. One of the most important part of being a journalist is to observe other people, watch for details, and take good notes. The class practiced by watching a video of local, Todd Kirnan. Todd and the city of Gresham were recently on national news to celebrate what an inspiration Todd is. We used the video to help look at who the article was about, what happened, when and where it took place and why it was important

To practice notetaking many writers went around to other classes and the middle school to observe morning meetings and routines.  Each writer had a small notepad to take notes and then they read their notes while they were fresh in their minds and then did a “quick” write in their regular writing journal. After the quick write, journalist worked on revising their writing and making sure that they covered the five Ws….who, what, when, where, and why!

Another important part of being a journalist is to write a strong lead. The lead entices, entertains, and informs the reader.  Mrs. Dawkins’ class practiced by looking at articles from the Gresham Outlook and deciding what kind of lead they were: simple, scenic, argumentative, filled with news, or sensational.

Reading:

By Gena Heuker and Avalea Younker

Our class has started a new Reading unit on informational text. We will be reading magazines, books, and news articles.  This week we worked on finding the main idea when reading a news article. We read a paragraph, thought about what it was mainly about, and then went onto the next paragraph.  Then we practiced finding the main idea when reading the informational books we have in our classroom. Next week we will be learning difficult vocabulary words.

Cartography

By: Olivia young and Laikan Heuker

Last week Mrs. Dawkins class the classroom started a new unit called cartography. (The meaning for cartography is when we use a grid to label continents and oceans, to find where you are on the map).

These last two weeks classroom #12, has been studying how to use a grid and, plane pieces of paper to see if they got it correct/similar to when you used a grid.

Classroom #12 also made a  tape square to use as a map, then the classroom used a grid to see if it was easier than using plain paper and a pencil.

RBI (Right Brain Initiative)

by Job Moseley, River Hergert, and Nicholas Heuker

This week Mrs. Dawkins’ class had their third session with Mrs. Flinn. Students in the  brain class played a game called Zip, Zap, Zop. To begin, someone says “zip” and claps and then points to another person. That person says, “Zap” and then points to a person, who then says ” Zop.”  This continues until someone makes a mistake.

Another activity that Mrs. Flinn lead was doing careful observation. One partner looked carefully at the other and then turned around. Then the first partner changed three things about themselves. The second partner had to try to figure out what they had changed.

The final activity was putting our acting skills to work. We had to act out a scenario that you might find on the playground, such as kids not included another kid in a game.  We will practice our scenarios more next week.

ART: Leaves

By: Dario.Cerruti and Evan.Clark ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý

On Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Dawkins class created painted leaves with watercolor paint which made them look cooler but to make them even cooler, when they blended different colors to make cooler ones.  Some people didn’t finish this week and will complete their leaf next week.

Hello Families,

It was nice being able to meet face to face this week during conferences. Thank you for taking the time to come and talk about your kids. We have just a couple left next week. We have set some great goals!
Here is a look at our past week:
±á¾±²õ³Ù´Ç°ù²âÌý
Kids continued studying a Native American Region. We also introduced them to their final project which will be to create a Google slides presentation with their research team. Each child is responsible for one or two slides. They are wrapping up their research and will put together their slides this next week. Presentations will be Wednesday and Thursday.
Writing
Kids are wrapping up their second narratives. This week we took a close look at revising by using figurative language. I saw many attempts to use similes, metaphors, and some even tried meaningful alliteration! We also worked on making internal thoughts and dialogue as powerful as it could be by structuring it carefully after an action scene.  We finish publishing our stories next week and hope to share them with our buddies from Mrs. Mack’s class.
High Frequency Words
Most everyone took their second assessment and many were a lot more successful this week!  New lists went home on Thursday. Tests will be on Thursdays. Thanks to Angie Heuker for helping out last week.
Reading
Most kids are loving their silent read time. It has been great to see them beg me for more and more time to read their personal books. Many of our young readers made a goal about choosing more challenging books or finding a series of books to read. Remember to read at home at least 20 minutes each day.
Special Events & Expectations Reviewed
We had local firefighters come in and talk to the kids about fire safety in the home. They also got their annual look at a fire truck, very exciting. Overall, the kids did not handle the task with ease. This event led to a big conversation on how to behave when we are excited.  We now have some very specific expectations when a guest teacher is presenting and also for when we are outside doing a special activity. Please review with your child: hand up if you want to speak, no side conversations, whisper when traveling outside, give people personal space (no piggy back rides, no poking others, no grabbing).
More Zentangles!
We continued learning about new types of Zentangles. This not only are amazing art, they are also great for our fine motor and focusing skills!
Picture Retakes
Didn’t like school pictures or were absent that day? No worries! We will have school picture retakes on Wednesday, October 24.
Math
If you have NOT received an email from your child’s math teacher this school year…PLEASE let me know.

Writing: Personal Narratives

  • Writers typed their personal narrative stories about a small moment this week!
  • Some writers had one-on-one conferences to discuss what they can work on, to further develop their writing.
  • I will be conferencing with other writers next week to discuss their writing.
  • Please encourage your child to work on their personal narratives at home on their google account.

Social Studies: First Americans

  • We are beginning our new unit on Native Americans
  • Our class watched three videos that explained possible ways the gatherers and hunters made it from Eurasia to North America
  • We colored a map of the six regions that the Native American groups we will be studying lived: Northeast, Southeast, Plains, Great Basin, Plateau, and Southwest

Art: Landform Art

  • Artists were given 2 different landform artists to write about and draw a piece of their art work in preparation for our field trip on Tuesday!
  • Please encourage your child to go outside and create land art. Take a picture and send it me so your child can share it on Monday morning.

Guest Teacher on Wednesday

  • We welcomed having Mrs. Hanes in our classroom this week!
  • We learned about a little bit about how our brain works and controls our emotions.
  • We continue to increase awareness of how to help with our Zones of Regulation (green, yellow, blue and red).

Thanks for having such wonderful kiddos and I wish all of you a wonderful weekend. I was out of the classroom on Thursday, but will return on Monday!
