Snow Day Homework!

Please have your child read for at least 30 minutes. I sent home new reading logs last week just in case we got more snow. Looks like things should be back to normal tomorrow.

Math?

Please check to see if your child’s math teacher sent home snow day math homework.

Jump for the Heart!

In backpacks Thursday were flyers detailing this initiative, as well as information for students to raise money for the American Heart Association. Participation is, of course, voluntary. Our main focus is to have healthy hearts.

A note on fundraising: If we reach our school goal of raising $1500, well get some new PE equipment donated!油Click油油to learn more. Search Corbett Elementary to register!

If students choose to raise money, there are some thank you gifts. These will be distributed by our PTA volunteers, at a table right inside the entrance hallway on the next three Thursday mornings (2/14, 2/21, 2/28).

Heres Hannah leading the K/1 through an assembly!

Argument Writing:
We continue to find evidence to support our claim about whether or not Corbett Grade School Cafeteria should serve chocolate milk to students. This week we worked on adding quotes and “unpacking” our evidence. We learned phrases to help push our thinking and we worked on redrafting our writing.
Reading:油
Our young readers continue to make book selections that hold their attention.油 The number of Rockin’ Readers continue to grow. Thanks for reminding your child that reading at home is not only required but the best way to improve reading skills.
I am reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane for our read aloud. Please ask your child to tell you about it.
Colonial America
We are currently going through a CSI investigation about the mystery of the lost colony of Roanoke. The different scenarios have the kids thinking deeply about what really did happen to these pioneer colonists. Do you know what happened to them?
  • The colonists traveled to the Croatoan Island and because part of the Croatoan Tribe?
  • The colonists starved to death?
  • The colonists were lost at sea?
  • The colonists were taken hostage of killed by the Spanish?
  • The colonists were attacked by neighboring tribes?
Art – Sculpture
This week we worked on paper sculptures. Our creations are located in the hallway, right outside our door.
Valentine’s Day (Thursday, February 14)
Instead of purchasing store-bought油cards, our class will be creating their own cards to exchange with five of their classmates. Our hope is to make cards that are a bit more meaningful. We would also love to share a cupcake and some juice in the afternoon (we will exchange Valentine’s, enjoy a treat, and play a game at 3 pm). Please let me know if you would like to help out.
Contributions needed:
  • canned vanilla frosting
  • canned chocolate frosting
  • cupcake decorations
  • apple juice
  • Valentine’s Day paper plates
  • Valentine’s Day napkins
  • Valentine’s Day cups

Mark your calendars for the following:
Monday, February 18 – No School油 – President’s Day
Friday, February 22 – Friday School油
Thursday, March 7 – End of the Second Trimester
March 25 – 28 – No School due to Spring Break
May 14, 15 and 16油 – Overnight Field Trip for Geology of the Gorge
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Have a super week!

Dear Fabulous Families,

Since coming back from winter油break, our class has been hard at work on a variety of projects and areas of study. Students have made great gains in keeping track of their weekly reading log and turning them in each Monday (or Tuesday next week). Thank you for your help in making sure that reading each day at home becomes a habit.油
Here’s a brief update of what we’ve been working on lately. Please see attachments for more details.
Reading:
I started a new read aloud titled The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. The class seems to really enjoy the story.
In addition, we have been enjoying independent reading time and taking notes on the literary elements such as character traits and feelings, theme, problem, solution and important events.
Writing
After receiving a letter from Mrs. Hanes asking us to examine the issue of whether or not our school should continue serving chocolate milk in the cafeteria, our class has been busy examining this debate. As part of this unit, we have also introduced the format of an argument essay, which I have attached for your reference. Students already flash-drafted (a quickly written version of their argument) and will continue to research and develop their arguments in the coming weeks.油
Social Studies
With the Age of Exploration in the rear-view, we plunged into the beginnings of the American colonies. Students learned why England was a late participant (compared to Spain and Portugal) in exploring and colonizing the New World. Some reasons included problems at home, including the油油and discussed other motivations that led some British citizens to leave油and colonize America. Coming up, the early settlements of Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth. Good stuff!
P.E.
We have been doing stations with a variety of exercises and stretches. This will continue for the next two weeks.
Jump for the Heart
The elementary school will be participating in the Jump for the Heart beginning on February 6th, more information to come.
Overnight Field Trip
In conjunction with our upcoming unit on the油geology of the Pacific Northwest, we will be headed to the Scablands of Central Washington from May 14th until May 16th for a two-night油overnight油field trip! We’ll be staying at Sun Lakes-Dry Falls State Park in Coulee City, Washington. We’ll sleep in either tents or cabins. We will share a lot more information in March about this trip, but for those of you that would like to chaperone, we wanted to tell you the dates now so you can plan accordingly with your work schedules.
Boxtops
Please send in BOXTOPS packages of groceries at home. Each month, classes compete to see which room can bring in the most boxtops. Thank you!
image.png
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. We can always use more volunteers in the room, if you are able.油
To remind students why we have a long weekend, we will be watching this video and discussed the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. Check it out:油
Have a great day!
Becky

HI! Here is a quick rundown about what we have been learning about:

Reading at home: I have many Rockin’ Readers that are reading at home and filling our their reading log, in fact, 17 out of 23 students read over the winter break. Kiddos who choose not to read at home have been coming in during snack to do their “at home” reading homework then they go out for recess. Everyone who has had to come in have been very mature and respectful about making up their homework.

Reading~ Expert Groups: Flip Grid is a new tool that we will be using in the classroom. I post a question and then each student is asked to respond via video. This week’s question was, “If you could become an expert on any topic, what would it be and why?” Everyone did a wonderful job responding to the question using complete sentences, a speaking voice with professionalism. So, now what? All readers will research their topic using the internet, videos and books from the library to become more knowledgeable about their topic.

Writing~ We finished up our Journalism Unit and ready to move onto Research Based Argument.

Colonies~ I am excited about our upcoming unit, Colonies! We started the unit by referring to the Age of Exploration and asking ourselves, “What was England doing during the Age of Exploration?” This conversation will continue this upcoming week. Please ask your child, “What was England doing during the Age of Exploration?”

Thanks for having awesome kiddos and please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Have a great week.

I know it is Sunday afternoon, so this is a tad late. Here are some quick updates that you might be interested in:

  • Progress reports will be coming home on Wednesday. Please look over your child’s progress report with them and discuss how they feel school is going and perhaps brainstorm some goals for the winter.
  • Thank you to all of you that made purchases at the Book Fair last week. It was wildly successful and because of its success, each teacher earned around $160 that they could spend at the Book Fair on books for their classroom. I was able to add to our classroom library with a wide variety of books. I am sure the kids will be excited to read these books.
  • Our canned food and supplies drive continues until Tuesday, December 18th. If youre able to, please send in nonperishable food items and/or helpful household supplies. These will be used to assist local families in need during this holiday season.
  • HUGE congrats go out to the following students for attending every day of school during the first trimester: Brighton, Shayla and Savin.
  • The 4th/5th grade classrooms are participating in an Ugly Sweater Contest the last week of school. Students will be encouraged to fully embrace a sweater from their wardrobe that is both tacky and celebratory of the good times we have in December.
  • White Elephant Gift Exchange is always a fun activity that everyone loves. Please have your child look around their room for something that they no longer need or play with. This can be a book, a small toy, etc. something that someone else will enjoy. Please have your kiddo wrap it up and bring it to school by Wednesday, December 19th. I will have extras for anyone who does not have a white elephant gift so this way everyone can participate.

Hi! What a great week that just seemed to zoom by! Here is a quick run-down of what we did this week:

Is your child reading at least 4 times a week at home for 20-30 minutes? Studies show that it is critical that reading on a daily basis is an important part of developing strong reading and writing skills. Students who are choosing to not read at home will be invited to have snack in the classroom while they do their independent reading homework. Recess? Yes! They will still enjoy their friends at recess. Please let me know if you have any questions about reading homework.

Writing: Journalism

  • comparing news report to feature article
  • flash drafts of news reports about Acts of Wonder
  • flash drafts of feature articles
  • recognizing different leads reporters use

Reading: Non-Fiction油

  • finding central main idea
  • reading for more than one main idea and find supporting details about that main idea
  • Continue reading our fiction books independently

Acts of Wonder:

This was our last week with Mrs. Flinn. She was a joy to have and we learned a lot about movement, emotions, expression and how to use our bodies to communicate. In addition we performed our problem solving skits with our buddies. I was very impressed with how professional everyone was.

Age of Exploration:

  • Please ask your child the following questions:
    • What/Who inspired the Age of Exploration?
    • What was it like on a ship during the Age of Exploration?
    • Why is Marco Polo famous?

Quick reminder: Next week is a two-day week so everyone can enjoy their family and friends!

I wish all of you a wonderful weekend and please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Weekly reading油

By: Aubrey & Hennessey

Did you know your child should be reading 20-30 minutes a day? They need to be turning in their reading logs and filling them out. At home or in school . They are doing really good but if you could encourage them to read at home that would be awesome. There are some kids that are on the Rockin’ Readers list for reading at least four times a week. Some kids are even getting the reading log the reading the reading log is a cushion that goes on the kids chairs and the ground.

Non-fiction reading

By Aiden and Jackson

At Corbett elementary school the 4th and 5th graders in Mrs. Young’s class room are beginning to read non-fiction books of their choice. Mrs. Young has been going back and forth to Multnomah county library in Troutdale to get non-fiction books.

When Cameron was asked how Mrs. Young knows what books to reserve, he stated, I put the name of the book on a sticky note and then I give it to mrs young.mrs.young now has 111 non-fiction books checked out of the Multnomah county 油library in Troutdale.

THE BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

By Ella And Shayla

The Battle of the Books is a statewide competition in which teams from each class read a list of 16 books for their age group (third through fifth in our case). Some of the books on the list are…Wish, Real Friends, Roller Girl and Ugly.

In February there will be a competition for the third through fifth teams in Corbett Grade School. The team that wins this competition will go on to the Multnomah county competition. The school that wins that competition will go onto the statewide competition. Finally the school that wins that competition will win the Battle of the Books for 2018.

The kids from our class that are participating are Ella, Shayla, Dottie, Aubrey, Tristan and Sayvin.

Acts of wonder with Mrs.Flinn

By Grace and Tylen

In the classroom all of your kids are participating in drama called acts of wonder. In acts of wonder your kid is in a circle participating in games, short films such as zip zap zop, the ball game and movement. The class focuses on breathing for the yellow zone and red zone to get back to the green zone also on observations on other people and themselves. Every week on Wednesday we have acts of wonder this week we worked on focusing on moving 油and on vocal cords and movement heavy, light, fire, water, air and earth.

Graders Becoming Journalists

By Kinley and Gabriela

At Corbett Grade School, the 4th and 5th graders in Mrs. Youngs class has been learning how to be journalists. This week they focused on leads and interviewing. The different leads are simple, newsy, explanatory, scenic, argumentative and sensational. In class they interviewed Ella because she is in a play called SchoolHouse Rock. After that, the journalists interviewed their writing partners.

Cafeteria Update

By Riley and Lev

This week, the kids at Corbett Grade School have gotten better at respecting Mrs. Tanya, the lunch supervisor, in the cafeteria. A week ago, they had been disrespectful but they are working on it, and it has gotten a lot better since then.

To solve that problem, Mrs. Tanya, the lunch supervisor, has turned the lights off at the beginning of lunch and snack, and the kids have dropped their noise level in the cafeteria.

It gives me headaches when it gets too loud. Says Mrs. Tanya.

The box tops for the Corbett grade school has been doing really good. The winner for Weptember is mrs Chiu’s class. and The winner 油of October is mr Wallaces class. Just remember to turn in those box tops.

Spelling

By Sayvin and Tristan

Every week your child gets a spelling list to practice at home. There are tests on thursday and if your child misspells a word your child will get the same word the following week. If ms.young does not have any words from the 300 most common word list that the student missed she looks in the writing journal for misspelled words and she adds it to the list.the students to practise they write each word 3 times a day. It helps the students because when they are writing the words a lot it helps them memorize the words Sayvin says. Ms. young makes students use their creativity the students sometimes have to right in pyramid 油form, rainbow form and few others. Remember to tell your kids spell, spell spell your words gently through weekend.
